Cody Garbrandt Says Jean-Claude Van Damme Nearly Nearly Knocked Him, And His Teeth Out

Besides honing his skills in Thailand, Cody Garbrandt stopped by Mike Swick’s podcast studios to share one heck of a story involving Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Swick and Garbrandt shared a few stories over the course of their conversation but one in particular is generating some buzz. Garbrandt detailed an encounter with Van Damme that left him in awe. And not in a good way.

BJPenn.com provided the transcription:

The first day we came to the gym he’s like, ‘Alright, I need my warm up.’ It was like a 38 minute warm up; 38 minutes exactly,” Garbrandt recalled. He had his head wrapped with towels, sweating profusely all over the place. … He started throwing kicks on Chris and threw this f*cking fast kick, like he came up and…I don’t know what it’s called. It’s the one he always does. He brings his foot up real quick then brings it down; a hook kind of. Chris is there like ‘Oh, sh*t! I better keep my guard up’ and I was like ‘Damn, he threw that at Chris’ head. Fast, without any warning.’

Here’s a clip of Van Damme whipping a kick near Chris Holdsworth’s head. You can see Garbandt walk around shaking his head in disbelief.

After showing Holdsworth some of his moves, it would be Garbrandt’s turn to learn from the action star.

Finally he was like ‘I want to show you this kick.’ It was kind of a variation on the teep and you twist it at the end. So I do it like three or four times on him. I put it down and then got in this fight stance and I saw in his eyes like ‘You wanna go?’ And I was back against the cage. So he started playing with me, acting like he was going to throw some kicks, and he started throwing hands like slapping at me… He kicked me in my teeth, dude. He kicked me in my teeth just playing around. Like how many times have we punched at each other and we can pull our punches? This dude just straight kicked me in my teeth. I’m not going to lie, he has some fast a** kicks, but I was demonstrating the kick he showed me to get it right. Then I put my foot down and he kicked me right in the teeth. I went black. Gabrandt, a known hot-head, immediately got angry about what had just transpired. However, the former UFC champ knew better than to take out his aggression on the action star and Van Damme would quickly apologize for the incident after it happened. I wonder if the same would’ve happened if Van Damme made the same mistake with this infamous tandem.

To be fair, Garbrandt should know better than to tangle with the world’s most dangerous undercover operative.
